Metal Inspired Desk

A dream of mine is to gut and renovate/flip a house at some point in my life, so moving and buying a house with a few “projects” has been exciting to me.

We replaced all the flooring and painted just about every inch of the house, including trim, windows, cabinets and doors. There are a few rooms that are still a work in process (like all the bathrooms) and little things everywhere to finish up. Take a guess at what we will be doing this winter!

When you come into the house the office is one of the first things you see. I really wanted this room to make a statement and have a good “pop” to it. This Metal Inspired Desk became one of the DIY’s.

Here is what we started with……

Looks like your average office without the “pow” I was looking for.

I had visions of a beautiful metal desk for this room. How cool would that look with new paint, right?

The previous owners left this desk.

Being the “thrifty” person that I am, I couldn’t justify buying a new one. After all, it is in great condition and almost FREE, so of course, this became a project. The goal, a metal desk!

I spent hours researching the best way to get a metal finish. Nothing really stood out so I decided to “wing it.” No matter what I did I could also strip it down and start over, so why not, right?

I sanded it just enough to rough it up and stained it with the leftover stain I had from the front door. For the metal finish I used galvanized spray paint and lightly covered the entire thing. It was close, but it still needed something. After trying several different things, I came across a silver polishing wax. I smeared this all over and topped it off with a few coats of poly. Not exactly perfect, but I think I came close to getting a metal look.
