Projects like this are perfect for me, because they are cheap! Even better when they involve using something I already have laying around the house. Count me in!
Supplies
- Old Suitcase
- Chalkboard or Black Flat Paint (any kind of black works, I used primer because that’s what we had on hand)
- Chalk
- Painter’s Tape (optional)
These are the options of suitcases I had to work with. I like the texture of the black and gray one for this project.
Start by removing any straps or decorative pieces from the side of the suitcase you are going to paint.
If you need to, line the edes with painters tape to prevent the paint from ending up on any areas you don’t want painted. Since my suitcase has a ribbed edge and because I’m lazy I didn’t use any tape. Winging it!
Now that you have your suitcase prepped, paint the area you want to cover. Allow to dry and add additional coats, as needed.
Once dry, this suitcase is your canvas! Draw a picture, add a quote, or attach a mini wreath.
The best part of this project is that if you screw up you can either wipe it off or just spray paint over it.
One of my favorite places to use these suitcases is on the porch. If the weather washed off the chalk it’s so easy to do it over or change it up.
Depending on the size of the suitcase, you could add it to the top of a cabinet or bookshelf, place it by a fireplace, or hang it on a wall (a colored suitcase with a fun word, quote, or rainbow would look adorable in a kid’s room or playroom).
These Chalkboard Suitcases also make a great canvas that you can use to capture some of your favorite memories – first day of school, homecoming, graduation, Mr & Mrs. for a wedding, or write your house number and use it on the porch.
For me, old suitcases have a family vibe. Can you imagine the stories they have from the places they’ve been, people they’ve met, and what they’ve seen? Just like all the other things I try to find, the more beaten, broken and tattered the better. In my mind, this means they have the most amazing stories and memories. Suitcases are a cozy addition to any space…..everyone loves the feeling of coming home.
So, hit up your attic, neighborhood yard sales or local thrift store, and channel your inner DIYer to make this super easy Chalkboard Suitcase.
