The house we ended up buying wasn’t even one we were planning on looking at, at the time. After a long unsuccessful day of house hunting our realtor suggested this one and despite everyone feeling frustrated, tired, and crabby we forged on. You never know, right? At first, the girls absolutely hated it, but there was something about it that drew us in. We discovered this house by accident and that is exactly how we got our custom stair rail, by accident.
While demoing the upstairs my husband was having a field day with destroying stuff and was quick to remove the existing stair rail. This hasty decision cost us a little extra money and time, but it also ended up working to my advantage. What an unfortunate accident!
This is what the stair rail looked like before.
The original plan was to paint the railing white like all the other trim and baseboards in the house. The hope was that by creating a contrast between the white trim and the black iron rods it would make it pop, giving it more of a modern, updated look.
What a disappointment to learn from our contractor that the original railing could not be reattached. Absolutely crushing! There were no words for this devastating blow, I could hardly contain my disappointment! Ha! I guess the only option at this point is to completely redesign the space. Bummer! Seriously, this is AMAZING!! Now we get to start over and create what we want.
For the next several weeks we lived on the edge, literally! Thankfully, we survived with no Emergency Room visits, but I was a nervous wreck the entire time! It ended up being so worth it, though!
Not only did we update the railing, we also made changes to the stairs themselves.
Do you see the extra large landing at the bottom of the stairs? It looks wonky and I really don’t understand the purpose of it. Maybe it’s the hot mix of flooring that’s throwing me off? Regardless, it’s dated and needs go.
We knocked that baby out and added a “normal” step which already makes it look better.
Between this and all the other updates in the house the hallway looks completely different now, too.
What a transformation!
You guys, I am head over heals completely and totally in love with the way this turned out! Absolutely smitten! It is gorgeous and I am so grateful to the smart masterminds who were able to take my vision and turn it into this incredible stair rail!
Yes, that is rebar….loving it!
We carried the same earthy wood throughout the kitchen, the fireplace mantels, and into the design of the railing which really ties the space together.
All the different textures and colors give the room a warm, cozy industrial farmhouse look and feel. Loving it!! You can see more of the living room transformation [HERE].
This is so me and my style, which is why I am so infatuated with it. It is not for every house or everyone, but we love it and that’s what matters most.
We made these changes because we wanted to incorporate a certain look, feel, and style into our home. For some, this house would be incredible just the way it was, but we were looking to make it feel like us.
If you ask the girls about the house now, they will tell you instantly that they ABSOLUTELY love it!
Don’t be afraid to take a risk! We took a chance on my crazy ideas! I started this blog to inspire others. What I do may not be for you, you may not like it, and it may not work for your style. That’s ok, that’s not my goal. My hope is that my stories and ideas inspire you, encourage you, and build your confidence to do what you want!
Thank you for stopping by today and always, I am so grateful you are here!
