For me, mantels scream character and embody all the feelings you have when you are home…love, family, warmth, security and peace. Plus they are a great place to showoff your favorite treasures, photos or kid’s artwork. When I am “freshening” up with the change of the seasons I like to start with the mantel. I love changing it up, but always struggle with how or what to use to. Sometimes finding the inspiration to get started is the hardest part! Trust me, there are usually several variations before I finally end up with something I don’t want to change right away. As I tackle mine for Fall I thought I would share a few tips. These work great for styling a stand alone mantel or floating shelf if you don’t have a fireplace.
Start with an Anchor
Start with a piece like a mirror, empty frames, or a wreath to use as your anchor. This will be the main element that you’ll build your design around. If you have something you just bought or are dying to use, get that out and start playing around with it. An easy place to start is to think about the seasons and use an anchor inspired by them.
Use Texture/Layer
Bring in layers. Layer pieces of different shapes, sizes and structures around your anchor. I like to use elements of wood, metals, and natural greenery/florals to add contrast and texture. This can be as simple as using varying shades within your color scheme.
Create Depth with Height
Create movement by adding dimension to your mantel. Using items of varying heights will help create movement and balance to your design. Stems/branches in vases/bottles, candlesticks or lanterns work great to add depth. It’s ok to have hills and valleys of height, movement and balance are the key.
I personally like the look of candlesticks without candles. It is always a challenge for me to get tapers to fit and stand straight. No doubt, user error!
Character – what “represents” you/fun element
This is a great way to showcase pieces in a collection, an heirloom, or a newly found “treasure.” This is yours, add your “style” to it. It doesn’t have to look perfect with expensive “pretty’s,” but it does need to make you
feel good
feel at home
and be a place that warms your heart.
I hope this is helpful as you start thinking about decorating for the upcoming holidays.
Thanks for stopping by and hanging out, always.
